3D Realms Officially Shutdown

Posted by nspa (Members) at Friday May 8 2009, 10:58 PM. 3 comments

Posted Image[xtable]In what appears to be the most belated April Fools day joke, 3D Realms, creators of Prey and the Duke Nukem series, have shut down effective immediately due to Take-Two cutting funding for the elusive Duke Nukem Forever project.

Is this the end of our blonde haired, one-liner hero that graced our archaic SVGA screens in 1996, or will he live to kick ass and chew bubble gum another day? Read On...[/xtable]

Ghostbusters exclusive to Sony platforms in Australia [UPDATE!]

Posted by lexielab (Administrators) at Thursday May 7 2009, 03:50 PM. One comment

Posted Image[xtable]One of the most anticipated games seeing winter release this year is Ghostbusters. While originally developed and scheduled for publishing by Atari, a last minute deal has seen Sony secure the publishing rights. The bad news is that while North America will see delayed release of the 360, Wii and DS versions, PAL territories will not see them at all. This will make it impossible to play the game on an Australian Wii short of utilising hacks or the Freeloader. The same will be true of the 360 version if it is region-locked.

That this news is so shocking is a sign of how multiplatform this generation truly is.

New via Kotaku AU

UPDATE:
Atari

“The release of the Xbox 360, PC, Wii and Nintendo DS versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game will launch across Europe and PAL regions in Spring 2009. More information regarding the release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game for Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Wii and PC will be made available in due course by Atari Inc.”

[xtable]Most people say that Rare lost the plot a long time ago. I should point out to those people that Rare are responsible for the hugely addictive Viva Piñata series, proof Rare still have what it takes! Pocket Paradise was released on the DS simultaneously alongside the sequel to the original sleeper hit on the Xbox 360 in late 2008. And much like its original 360 version has become for the most part a sleeper hit.

Pocket Paradise is an incredibly faithful portable version of its console big brother. At its roots you’ll find a sandbox styled gardening management game. The catch is that you’ll also have to attract, romance and manage Piñatas. Think Pokémon crossed with a healthy dose of cute, and stuffed with candy!

Once you get your fingers dirty you’ll find some incredible depth underneath the cute kiddie appearance of the game. Certain Piñatas will only appear if your garden meets specific “visit” requirements. There’s no single garden setup that will successfully attract all the Piñatas, so you’ll constantly be managing your garden, changing it to suit your needs as well as your Piñatas.

The overall point to the game is to get all the Piñatas and romance them enough until you gain “Master Romance” status. On top of that most of the Piñatas have a variant you can create, usually by making them eat a certain type of fruit which will alter their appearance. There’s also a few Piñatas that you can fully evolve into an entirely different breed.

There’s a full fledged economy system you’ll have to deal with too, planting seeds, watering them and selling off the grown fruit is one way to raise some cash, or you can just breed lots of Piñatas to sell.

There really isn’t enough room here to go into complete detail about everything you can do, there’s just so much depth to it! I have no doubt about giving this game the thumbs up, once you’re addicted you won’t even notice the hours flying by.[/xtable]

DSi: Future Firmware Additions Wish list!

Posted by Ingram (Administrators) at Monday Apr 13 2009, 10:59 PM. 3 comments

[xtable]So we’ve all had a few weeks with our new DSi and we’re slowly starting to discover its annoying little niggles that we all wish could be fixed. Here’s what I’ve found that hopefully Nintendo will address in the future with firmware updates:
  • Wireless Communications: There's the option to turn it on/off in the settings menu. The irritating thing is that if you have this set off and attempt to do anything that involves Wi-Fi you’ll be promptly told that Wireless Communications is turned off and to bugger off and turn it on. There’s no quick and easy option to turn it on for one time use there and then, resulting in you having to go all the way to the settings just to turn it on. Minor annoyance, but something that should be easily fixed with a quick prompt to turn it on when needed.

  • System Update: When you attempt a System Update, you’ll be told that there is a new version available for download regardless of whether you have the latest version or not. The DSi doesn’t seem to actually know until it attempts to download the firmware. This is pretty sloppy on Nintendo’s part. It wouldn’t be hard to change the firmware download system so the DSi can compare its current firmware with the one available online and tell if it’s the same or not.

  • Music Playback: I fully understand that Nintendo aren’t marketing the DSi as the next Ipod. That’s all fine with me. The issue is that the DSi is actually quite useful as a music playback device; it just falls short in a few areas. I’ve got some CDs in AAC format on my memory card (using Itunes to convert CD to AAC @ 320Kbs), they sound great and I quite enjoy the interactivity you can have with the music. But what I really want to see is the option to have the Left and Right Trigger buttons act as Fast Forward/Next Track buttons for music playing while the DSi is closed. Sure it’s fun using them for little sound effects, but it gets old fast, and that’s when you really start craving that they left them just for music control.
This is just some of the niggles that bother me and all that I've found so far. I'm sure I'll have a lot more to write about as I spend more and more time with my DSi.[/xtable]Have you got any niggles with the DSi that you think should be mentioned? Let us know in the comments!

Coolest DSi Colours Yet!

Posted by Ingram (Administrators) at Thursday Apr 9 2009, 12:41 PM. 3 comments

Posted Image[xtable]Some clever people over at morpheonmods.blogspot.com have mixed together a white and black DSi. The results... Astounding! I can't believe how appealing both of these look, I can't even decide which one I like more. The best part is that if you can afford it you can do it yourself with a simple Philips head screwdriver (the DSi doesn't use Tri-wing screws!) Of course there's probably a bit more too it and you might risk breaking something during the change over. Still it's a tempting thought no? Click the toggle below to see more pictures.

Dog Spying & Mii's On DS, News From The US DSi Launch!

Posted Image[xtable]joystiq.com had the chance to sit down and talk to David Young, the assistant PR manager for Nintendo of America while at the Nintendo DSi launch party in America. Lots of interesting things were mentioned:

On the topic of VC for GBA/GB:

That's sort of the hot topic, a lot of folks want to know about that. At this point, it's nothing that we've announced yet. It's still kind of "wait and see.

Regarding the Personal Trainer series:

We've got Personal Trainer: Walking coming out that's going to be really interesting. That comes with two pedometers ... well they're actually "activity meters," so they have more functionality than a pedometer.

They will connect wirelessly. On the edge of the DS cartridge there's a window, and that's an infrared connection. You can take your meter for a week, and download a full week's worth of activity, and it tracks it day by day and hour by hour so you can see how active you are and at what times. It's also the first title where you can import a Mii character from your Wii. You can even create a Mii character of your dog and put one of the activity meters on your dog's collar. So you can profile your dog and see what they're doing at home while you're at work.

I must admit I find the idea of attaching one of these pedometers to myself and my dog quite appealing, probably more so my dog so that I can see what she gets up to when I'm not around.

Sean Kenney Builds Nintendo DSi From Lego!

[utube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YipUNKP3X4w&feature=player_embedded[/utube][xtable]This is just crazy! I always loved Lego has a kid and mocked other kids with their plastic cars and action figures. I had Lego! it could do anything my imagination could come up. And I always believed that you could make anything with enough pieces, unfortunately I never had enough.

Sean Kenney is a LEGO Certified Professional. He was commissioned to create this giant DSi, and it really is huge! It's nearly 7 feet wide, weighs 250 pounds, and was built from 51,324 LEGO elements.

It's really best appreciated in the close up images, you can check these out here.[/xtable]Source: brothers-brick

Please Explain: U.S Gets Lacklustre DSi Ware Launch Too!

Posted by Ingram (Administrators) at Friday Apr 3 2009, 02:23 AM. 0 comments

Posted Image[xtable]I don't get Nintendo sometimes. They give us this new platform to release content to us, then they turn around and get lazy when it comes to releasing said content! If you didn't know by now, yesterday Australia was the first western audience to get the DSi Ware store. It contained a lacklustre total of 6 items, one of them being the internet browser. And now today Nintendo have announced what will be available on launch in America on the 5th of April. They're also only getting 6 items, that's also counting the internet browser!

There's no Moving Memo for them either! Where's is it? This was easily the biggest DSi Ware application I was looking forward too. Perhaps Nintendo have been slow at localising it for the western audience? Or maybe they don't think we're interested in it to begin with!

America aren't even getting the same content we got either. We have Pyoro, America get "Bird & Beans," which as far as I can tell is exactly the same game going by the screenshots they've released. They miss out on "Art Style: CODE" and "Paper Plane." For what reason I haven't a clue. I see no logical explanation to hold back software that's clearly ready for a western release.

So what do America get to make up for the two missing titles? "Brain Age Express: Math" and "Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face." How come these titles didn't get released yesterday in Australia?

Why are Nintendo umming and ahhing over what to release and in which regions? Why don't they just give all of the translated content to everyone? Because really, what do they have to lose? /rant[/xtable]Source: Press Release (containing the American DSi Ware launch line-up, or lack of.)

Mini Review: 3rd Earth Dsi Console Glove

Posted by Ingram (Administrators) at Thursday Apr 2 2009, 05:32 PM. 5 comments

Posted Image[xtable]If you read the DSi Vs Lite Examination I wrote, you'd know that I felt a bit concerned that the DSi would be easily susceptible to marks and scratches thanks to its new matte finish. Since the DSi is such an expensive item, it makes sense to want to wrap it up in a box of tissues and keep it warm. Unfortunately this isn't suitable for when we actually want to use it, or put it in our pocket.

Enter 3rd Earth's Console Glove! A thin silicon based skin that wraps around the outside of your DSi and covers the entire front and back of the system. There's a cut-out on the front for the camera , one where the stylus is stored and the SD card slot too. The top of the DSi for the most part is uncovered, but this is due to the console needing to be flexible, as well as accessible in that area.

3rd Earth has done a great job at matching the black silicon to the actual colour of the DSi itself. It's very difficult to tell there is a skin on the system unless you look closely. If you don't want black there are 4 other colours to choose from, ranging from purple, white, blue and pink.

It also comes with a wrist strap and a little cushion looking thing that's actually a handy little screen cleaner. Sure it might look a bit dicky dangling there, but you can always take it off.

I picked this up for a reasonable $14.95 from EB. I've seen 3rd Earth products in JB Hifi too so they’re fairly common. If you're after discreet, soft feeling protection for your new DSi then I recommend this glove.
