Pacific City is overridden; crime controls the streets. Three powerful gangs have taken the once-great metropolis hostage, and the police have proven powerless in their efforts to regain control. Only the Agency - with genetically enhanced agents of justice - can provide citizens with some sense of hope.

Brace yourself. Justice is coming to Pacific City.
Crackdown is a free roaming third person shooter developed by Realtime Worlds for the Xbox 360 and its demo is scheduled for release on Xbox Live on the 18th of Janurary. The game was created by David Jones, one of the original creators of the Grand Theft Auto series, and is set in a futuristic/cyberpunk setting. In a similar way to GTA San Andreas, your character has stats that are built up over the course of the game, and eventually he is capable of super human feats.

Crackdown Features:

    * Incredible Over-the-Top Action: Anything goes as you take back the streets by improving and discovering the amazing potential inside your Agent. As you polish your gameplay skills, your Agent's inherent genetic abilities will increase as well. Run at amazing speeds, make death-defying leaps, perform impossible vehicular stunts, lift massive objects, and deliver hits that will shatter your enemies.

    * Use Your Environment: Run out of ammo? That's no problem, thanks to the sheer number of props and a deep physics system that will blow you away. Use whatever's at hand to beat your enemies into submission—lightpoles, trash cans, cars, even people—to rid the streets of crime.

    * Legendary Game Designer: Crackdown comes from the mind and inspiration of David Jones, the creative mastermind behind Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. Here, he's taken the idea that shook the gaming world with Grand Theft Auto and brought it to an entirely new level using Xbox 360.

    * Next Generation Visuals: Harnessing the power of Xbox 360, Crackdown gives you a gang-ruled metropolis on a massive scale. It's cel-shaded look will immerse you in a living graphic novel, letting you make the battle for Pacific City personal.

    * Cooperative Gameplay: From the initial concept, Real Time Worlds focused on delivering dynamic, enthralling cooperative gameplay for an even more intense experience. Play across Xbox Live with a friend in the room or across the country, sharing skills and firefights in your joint effort to take down the gangs.

    * Cooperative Play will allow for seamless entrance and exits by friends or other Xbox Live members. Depending on your settings, you can receive join requets from only friends or from everyone online.

    * From Streets to Rooftops: Take the battle to the thugs through high-speed chases anywhere and everywhere. On foot or behind the wheel, nowhere is out of bounds.

    * Music To Fight Crime To: More than 100 licensed tracks, spanning a wide range of styles and genres, give audio identities to characters and locations.

    * Gangs: Three gangs are present in this sprawling Pacific city and each gang has their own district. The Los Muertos who speak Spanish, The Volk who speak Russian and Shai-Gen Corporation who actually speak English because their Board of Directors is multi-racial, causing their corporate language to be English.

Pretty insane draw distance for the characters too I wonder how complicated the AI for the off disctance ones will be. Doubt they will be doing much.

I quite like the cel shaded likeness the graphics have.

Add this to my wishlist :D

Yeah, very pretty game. Apparently the character levels up etc, so your jumping and running and etc improves. Looks to have some very kick arse gameplay from the vids I've seen on IGN as well as the 1up show this week.

Yup. Once your character is maxed out you're actions are quite Matrixy...
Also, I think the planet it's set on has low gravity (the cars fall slower than you'd expect), assuming it's set on another planet...

This does it. I am going to get a 360 once it hits... "$300". It may be a while, but dammit, when it does all these games will be cheap :)

The latest 1up Show (that focuses on X06 and some TGS highlights) has a section about this game and you have Luke Smith and... uh... I forget the other guy's name talking about how awesome Crackdown is, and there's some neato gameplay vids.

Edit: Latest 1up Yours is talking about how awesome the game is too at around the 42 minute mark. They reckon the battles play better than GTA and it may very well be superior.

Wake Up.
I like it how we find out about these games when they are seemingly close to release, not months or even years away.

Well, Crackdown has actually been pushed back into Q1 '07, so it's a few months away now. But still, not that far off (like say MGS4 or FF13).
