Edit: Looks like the rumoured 60GB model is for real. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2008/0713-consolestorage.htm

Old story:
Last week catalogue scans showing a 20GB 360 for $299 (starting the 6th of July) surfaced on the Internet. Now Yahoo news is reporting a rumour that there will actually be a price cut.
Quote:

Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) plans to cut the price of its best-selling Xbox 360 Pro model by $50, to $299 in the next few weeks, the Hollywood Reporter reported citing anonymous sources.

The price cut for the Xbox 360 model with the 20 gigabyte hard drive will come before the video game industry's biggest trade show, E3, taking place in Los Angeles on July 15-17, the report said.

Rumors of the Xbox price cut swirled on popular gaming blogs Joystiq and Kotaku last week. The two sites received snapshots of Kmart and Radio Shack flyers advertising the $299 price.
That'd mean you could import a 360 for $400 AU including express shipping if you felt so inclined. Here's a scan if you missed it...

Hot damn, that's pretty good for the Arcade + HDD. Assuming you don't need the component cables for an HD TV and don't care about a wireless, that's the cheapest way to snatch a 360 for sure. Screw K-mart Australia though. Reckon I may just buy a wireless headset and live vision camera if they're 40 bucks each. Hell, maybe a second controller...

So I guess the price cut is for realz.

It is

Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox 360 price cut, with Australians now able to buy an Xbox 360 for cheaper than the rampaging market leader - Nintendo's Wii.
From today, the Xbox 360 Arcade costs $349, while the (recommended) Pro version with a 20GB hard drive costs $499 and the Elite, which features a 120GB hard drive, now costs $649

If I wanted to purchase a silly last gen console that doesn't even have motion control I would get one with actual good games like the ps2 (this post is a joke (but seriously I am in the market for a ps2)).

Looks like the price cuts may be temporary, since MS have confirmed the rumours that there's a 60GB model of the 360 on the way. Here's hoping these new 60GB models definitely have new chipsets in 'em.

I think Microsoft would have said something about the price cuts being temporary, assuming that their purpose is to move units. People will complacently put off a purchase if it remains the same price, but if it is to go up again, they'll dip in before it does.

Anyway, I thought the rumour mill had it that the price cuts were to phase out a particular model(s) in favour of the 60GB version. Depends who you believe I guess.

Price cuts are in place to get rid of the 20GB Pro-version (and possibly the Arcade one) so they can create more room for the 60GB one.
