Sometimes I think I was born backwards
|
Posted Image Forgot all about this. GFW Magazine has revealed the new entry in DICE's Battlefield series, Battlefield Heroes. It's planned for release this Winter (Q2/3) and will be EA's first title to use their "Play 4 Free" model which uses in game ads and micro payments (think Korean MMOs where you buy items with real money) to cover costs. Getting the game and playing it will be entirely free, though.
The Game itself will be a third person shooter with a lower emphasis on skill and strategy, making the barrier to entry lower.
No images or videos have been release, but here's a scan of GFW's cover for the issue it was announced in: Posted Image Wonder if the may have been inspired by a certain game. A certain team based game. With Fortresses. Maybe 2 of them. *cough* Still interesting to hear about. Apparently the new Play 4 Free model is intended to combat piracy without completely abandoning PC gaming. If you wanna learn more, check out these GFW podcasts where they comment on reactions to the reveal (it's about 24 mins in). |

Heard this won't be available outside US or Europe. No idea how they are doing to make sure of that though. |

Intially, yes. No word on whether it's going to stay that way, though. There'll likely be ways around it, though. Apparently you access the game via a web portal. A bit of proxy playing around would get you around that... |

World's blankiest blank

I'm guessing that has something to do with the ads? Battlefield 2142 had the in-game ads removed for the Australian version, which I heard had something to do with our local laws. |

That's bloody stupid if that's the case. Every other form of media has ads... well ok, except music and books. But still! |

The other reason I guess could just be that their current advertisers don't have products here, and the cost/benefit analysis shows it isn't worth it to attract local advertisers? |

Looks like EA Australia is full of lies and chicanery. There will be a world wide release, apparently. |

The only possible reason to not allow a world-wide release/usage, are preliminary server costs. EA could lose heaps of money if no one actually uses the game. |

Looks like it could be fun, and hell, the price is right. |
