Ah the desert fields of Lut Gholein (most favourite Act from D2), such vast wideness... They were a good break from the contrsicting halls of the Monastery's catacombs that we spend the last 6 or so levels and pretty much from the 1st Diablo. But you're right, they weren't really freaky, but that just adds to the feel of unease that you get when you're told to venture off into one of the few temples littered across the sand... that's when things get a little more tighter (no real open spaces to run off to) and hectic. I'm guessing that's what Diablo III will use so it can create some of it's horror - also, you can't really take on the large beastie from the demo-vid in a cave now can we? But colour doesn't neccessarily means it will lose it's horror atmosphere... Just look at Bioshock! Game was full of crazy colours but it didn't distract you from the random splicers jumping at you and making you jump as well. Edited by nspa, Thursday Jul 3 2008, 06:53 PM.

WHY SO SERIOUS!
|
I'm one of 25512 Signatures in a petition suggesting Blizzard make the game look darker artistically. http://www.petitiononline.com/d3art/petition.html They've got some before and after images. I definitely favor the after images. Posted Image I never played much of Diablo but I reckon if they went ahead and did a new baldurs gate and it was all colourful and stuff I'd be upset just like all the Diablo fans are right now. As it stands now it just looks too WoW like for me. Doesn't feel like they've put any effort in to make it look different. Edited by Ingram, Friday Jul 4 2008, 03:43 AM.

lame. As Demaar said, why don't you wait to see what the game actually looks like (beyond the couple of screenies released) before jumping the gun? The thing is, if some areas are colourful and some are dark, the dark ones are automatically more moody. Sif people can't turn down the contrast and brightness on their tvs anyway. If the game was complete, people might have a point, but at the moment they're nothing but a pack of whingers. Shit people, if you're relying on colour to make a good game, it's never going to happen. |

I think you're missing the point. There has been game play footage as well as screens released. If the final game wasn't going to look like this they shouldn't be showing us anything. People don't want to have to turn down the contrast or anything to do with adjusting their screen because they want it to be the default. This is PC gamers we're talking about. Besides if you look at the comparison image above you can see there have been changes that simply adjusting your screen won't add. The game looks too much like a WOW mod for my liking a lot of other people it seems. Calling us a pack of whingers is a bit stupid when all we want to see is a coherent sequel that sticks to the dark n gritty art style of the series. Sure having a colourful world can help make those darker area's look darker but we've already seen these "darker" areas and they don't look very dark. And I'm not talking refering to the general lighting of the areas or the brightness when I say that. On top of that it's a lot of other things besides the colour that are of an issue, like the lighting system and art direction that are all too similar to WOW. I personally am not blaming all the problems on the brightness of the game. I just personally find the touched up "after" images look a lot more rusty and far from WOW's typical art direction that Blizzard seem to love doing. But of course the game is a good 2+ years away from competition apparently so there is plenty of time for change. All people are doing is airing their thoughts and opinions of what Blizzard felt was suitable to show us. Hardly warrants calling a hell of a lot of people interested in this game a pack of whingers. We only have to remember how many times Warcraft 3 went though massive changes during development to know that anything Blizzard show us is very tentative. But that doesn't mean people can't air their opinion on what has been shown to us thus far. 3000 + more signatures in the last 6 hours for that petition. Pretty impressive how many it's gathering. The petition was simply a means for generating discussion, which it has. I think we're all agreed on at the very least (I hope), is a good thing - if only, from my point of view, that it will make people think a little bit more behind the decisions made in the development of a game. I agree with lexie that colour isn't everything but I also think that Blizzard can do make really good example of different atmospheres. I think the after shot from above would be a good for the type of colours that we should see when you are about to face a massive demon, like all the prime evils should have at least that level of darkness if they were to be in the game (doubt it because if they come back in this game I'd be asking myself how the smeg do I kill them), somewhere in between the before and after for a sort of unique creature (like Rakinishu near the Cairn Stones in D2) and otherwise that level of brightness is a good natural twilight sort of colour. Anyway, my major concern is that the landscape so far is a bit too Warcraft-esque in that it still seems a little bit too undisturbed. If demons started pouring out from the fires of hell you'd think that it would be just a bit more sort of trampled and scorched and maybe even a good old stagnant river is in order |

Sometimes I think I was born backwards

But then what would they do if they weren't going to make it darker, didn't show it and didn't know to expect backlash from the community? That's the awesome thing about games compared to other forms of entertainment. We can see a work in progress and see where it's going, then make constructive (though not really in this case) criticism (which is mostly what's been happening with Starcraft 2).
Thing is, most of the people that made the first two Diablo games left Blizzard to make Flagship Studios. Knowing this, my expectations for a Diablo sequel shot to near nothing. So I guess I had nothing to be disappointed over. |

That's more my concern also rather than the general colour of the game. It is a bit too Warcraft eque as you say. And I get that feeling in the textures and the overall style of it. Edited by Ingram, Friday Jul 4 2008, 01:26 PM.

My comment towards a pack of whingers goes towards an internet petition. I consider them to be one of the most useless things to grace the planet. It's gutless and it tells the developers little except that people are not happy. People should be expressing their concerns more directly and not blindly jumping on the bandwagon. It's perfectly legitimate to have concerns, but I still consider expressing them only via petition is akin to whinging. |

That might be true but this petition they at least made an effort to express their opinion on the main page and included example images of what they felt the game should look like. I've never seen a petition with such a long main page. It could have be worse, it could have simply said "We hate the artistic direction change it! please sign..." As I said previously, the petition has created discussion and it's made itself known to a lot of people interested in the game. Good to at least have something to show for all the discussion it's generated on all the forums out there. Certainly a lot easier to sign it than register on the Blizzard forums and join the countless others bitching there. |

Woah people! Remember, this game is going to have a Night and Day cycle just like D2! So far we've only seen the daytime shots/vid of the outside world and none of the night time... only Blizzard knows how dark the nights will be (maybe they'll be so dark that people will opt to explore the plains in the day =P) |
