Joystiq has some coverage of the (finally confirmed to be for realz) new "Playstation Home" feature coming to PS3.
Quote:

Comparable to Second Life, PlayStation Home is a virtual community of PS3 owners living together in both public and private environments. Users will be able to login, chat with both text and speech and play casual games together such as pool, bowling and even embedded arcade machines. And when the old stand-bys grow stale, users can invite one another into other PlayStation Network titles outside of PlayStation Home.

Every user will have their own virtual apartment to decorate with furniture, their trophies from various games (see: achievements) and content from their own PS3s. For example, Phil Harrison took a snapshot of us in the crowd, slapped it onto a USB stick and right into a picture frame in his virtual flat. Not content at just images, users will also be allowed to share both music and videos with friends inside their private homes, which will most likely lead to some sort of underground pornography syndicate on the PlayStation Network.
While the download and access is free, content within the "world" of Playstation Home is not. You can choose to customise your character in various ways that will incur charges. In order to cover server costs, Sony has stated that Playstation home will contain "dynamic advertising". Hopefully that means it just might have advertising relevant to you as an individual.
Playstation Home will be available in its final form in the US in their Autumn.

Check out the video below to see what the fuss is about...

Just got around to watching the presentation video now, and yes, it's stupid crazy awesome. I really hope they let third parties use the Home avatars in games, because damn... that face customisation is the best I've seen in any game.
Here's the presentation video, it goes into far more detail:

Edit: Latest 1UP Yours podcast goes into great detail on all the cool stuff too. You can download it here.
I really like the idea of using it as a lobby for, like... every game. If Sony does this right, they have the best online setup this generation.

Edit 2: Game videos is kinda funking out, you can try getting the Sony keynote from Gamespot here (200 and something meg, should be worth it though).

Totally. I was getting giddy when they were talking about what Sony could possibly do with it on the 1UY 'cast. Srsly, with this and Little Big Planet, Sony has finally give me some really good reasons to get a PS3 outside of your usual games. They've really got something unique going on here.

Gamevideos has an interview between Phil Harrison and 1UP some 1UP staff. I haven't watched it yet (waiting on the full episode of the 1UP show), but I'll comment on it when I have it all.

Edit: I got impatient and watched it. FYI, every multi platform title out there? I'm buying the PS3 version. Home is just that awesome. Sif you wouldn't want more content in your home/trophy room. Achievements and fine and dandy, but they're just a bullet point, and most Wii multiplatform titles are half arsed control wise anyway and would have gimped graphics. I didn't think Sony could do it, but they've really made the PS3 a strong piece of hardware. Glad I had my expectations so low, because that just means I'm that much more blown away :D
Srsly, they're in talks with developers about using your Home avatar in games, that is super duper sweet all on its own.

This is what I was expecting Nintendo to deliver with Wii and they just dropped the ball. Hardcore. Sony's picked it up, it seems... and added a few bells and whistles.

FAQ about Home....

http://www.gaming-age.com/news/2007/3/9-18

Quote:

some answers...

Q: How will the Hall of Fame rewards program be implemented?
A: Users receive points for in-game achievements. More details regarding this will be made available closer to launch.

Q: What is the function of the Home central lobby and what is the maximum number of users in a lobby?
A: The Home central lobby is the central meeting place where you can meet new friends or arrange to meet old friends, before transferring to a private meeting place. The current maximum number of concurrent users in a single lobby is 64, but there will be a multitude of lobbies active at any given time for users to explore.

so it looks like there willl be a point system as well as game achievements (trophys/game replays/clothing/funiture/etc) ...... so thats good too. Im guessing sony was quiet about 'points' due to obvious reasons. But you need points as a way of measuring people....

Hmm... only 64 people in a lobby seems really kinda... very low. I suppose when open beta happens it could potentially go higher.
On the other hand, if that includes private spaces than that's not such a bad number.

Bit more stuff about Home from Kotaku...
Quote:

# Apartments are just the start. They're working on homes, gardens, and "neighbourhoods".

# Users will never be in an empty lobby - new lobbys will be spawned, like in an MMO, when the population hits 64, but they'll always be done so that a user is in a busy lobby, not sitting alone and despondant on the steps of the place, sobbing into his hands with despair.

# While there's a low limit on the number of people you can have in your apartment (16), they're working on "clan rooms" which fall between a room and the lobby, and can accomodate larger groups of people.

# The Sixaxis can be used for gesture controls. Phil gives a cute little wave as an example - wave the Sixaxis and your avatar will wave.

# Harrison says they'd like to explore having 3rd-party publishers use your Home avatar in games.

# The 3D space Home is built on is being worked on in London, but draws on tech coming out of San Diego and Tokyo, making it a worldwide collabo.

# Home was originally conveived as a graphical lobby system for the PS2's online component, but when they thought it was too awesome for that, they decided to save it for the PS3.
The Clan rooms thing sounds more acceptable. Being able to have a large number of people you actually want to play with is really important.
