Well Nintendo fans got all hyped up for the supposed announcement of a new Wii title by US developer Harmonix, but were disappointed, at least for now...

AN-Reports:

There's "absolutely" a chance that the newly-announced musical game Rock Band, from Electronic Arts, Harmonix and MTV, will weave its way to Nintendo's Wii, according to Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos.

Described by Rigopulos as his studio's "most ambitious project to date," the new game is so far headed only to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, however during a conference call, he reportedly said, "We will, at some time, bring Rock Band to every [important] platform."

Additionally, Rigopulos assured that each version of the game would be optimised to fit each platform, and on the topic of Nintendo's new console, he said, "I think the Wii-mote is something that holds enormous promise."

More on Rock Band, which is being developed by the team behind Guitar Hero, can be found here.

Ah hah. So people's sources must have been getting this game mixed up with Boogie as far as which was going to be a Wii exclusive. Shame, I'd probably have preferred this game.

And now I see why it's not coming to Wii. Just read this article about it on Kotaku and it looks like it will probably be a content driven game...

"Rock Band signifies the evolution of not only our audience but also of MTV and its media model. Music is at the core of everything we do at MTV. It's the hub of our audiences' social relationships and an incredibly important method of self-expression for them," Yapp said. "In today's world of social networking, instant messaging, digital downloading, and blogging, Rock Band represents a significant leap forward towards connecting our audience through their love of music."

And this isn't just a big deal to gamers and MTV, it's also a new way for labels and publishers to promote their artists and songs, said Mark Pinkus, Senior Vice President, Strategic Marketing, Custom Products and Synch Licensing from Warner Music Group's Rhino Entertainment.
Sounds like an amazing prospect. I just hope the pricing on the DLC is realistic.

I'd say this game qualifies as a killer app. I know so many people who'll go ga-ga for this, no matter how much it costs.

1UP has an article going talking about what information they've been able to scrounge from the Internets and their sources.

Let's rest one fear, right off the bat. IGN recently ran a story that claimed Guitar Hero controllers purchased for the PlayStation 2 versions would not work on Rock Band. Jason Booth, one of the many Harmonix developers participating on the official Rock Band message boards, confirmed this is incorrect. "For some reason, IGN posted that Rock Band will not be compatable [sic] with Guitar Hero guitars. I thought I'd drop in and let you know that this is not correct," he said.

Booth did confirm, however, a new guitar peripheral is being produced for Rock band, and it will vary from the already available one in some way. Could the effects pedal output found in the Xbox 360 controller be a hint at where they're going?
That's pretty awesome for 360 owners of Guitar Hero. But considering PS2 guitar controllers can't work with the PS3, PS2 GH owners are boned.
There's more information to be had, go check out the article :D

WHY SO SERIOUS!
This is the guitar for Rock Band. Notice the extra 5 frets for breaking out solo's?

How awesome is that. It's already looking better than GH3.

Funny too that it's based on the same guitar I own.

Now show us how the drums will work!

I know it's shopped, but damn that looks much better in build quality than even the mini-Les Paul. I hate to think how much this game is going to cost to play right though. Besides Acerlyte I don't know anyone that would want to play the game if they had to also fork over for peripherals...
