Wii Fit

Wake Up.
Just announced by Nintendo at the E3 Press Conference, the Wii Fit seems to be a new revolution in the Nintendo family.

Basically, you could consider it to be the size of a laptop which is then stood on by the user. It is assumed to house many weight sensors which show variances in weight distribution by the user (ie balance), and the overall amount of force the user is placing upon the device (ie weight).

Nintendo instructed the many uses of the product, from practising Yoga and step-up exserices where you follow the on screen instructors, to more elaborate ideas such as using the weight distribution dynamics to 'head' the soccer ball away from the goals via an onscreen avatar as you move similarly in real life.

Reggie boarded the tiny contraption and it was soon at work showing the power of the machine - it can show your posture, and even show your BMI (Reggie's was much over the average :D)

I believe this product has many MANY uses and I believe this will be an instant hit with the 'casual user' as Nintendo puts it. Another idea that I came up with is to use WiiFit in a snowboarding sitiation.

So, thoughts?

Really not my thing, but ninty haven't put a foot wrong with the casual gamer for the last couple of years so I'm not going to say anything against it

Undoubtedly, the biggest announcement to have come out of Nintendo's E3 media briefing was the revelation of Wii Fit, a new compilation that's aimed at the health conscious consumer, which will come packaged with a new - and revolutionary - 'Balance Board' peripheral, which is essentially a pad resembling a household set of scales.

Shigeru Miyamoto stepped onto the stage to unveil his new baby, which previously went by the name Wii Health Pack. He said that "The one game I wanted to introduce to you was...Wii Fit." When the concept of Wii was first born, the goal was to create a device that would become relevant to everyone. And one of the keys to attracting people of all kinds, according to Miyamoto, is the subject of health.

Wii Fit sees players stand on the pressure-sensitive, wireless Balance Board, which senses both their body mass index and their center of gravity, before discovering their Wii Fitness Age. A combination of fun aerobic, toning and balance activities are on offer, and one on-stage demonstration showed a player in the middle of a Yoga-like balance exercise, which had them standing on one leg and stretching. Another, more game-like activity, had players match the timing of the icons and the music.

"By standing on this board, it can measure your weight, and it also measures how your balance shifts," explained Miyamoto. "And so we can also use this as a new interface for games. There's one more very important element, and that's the idea of measurement...What we want to do is a body check on somebody."

Fils-Aime was the victim, and he stood tall on the Board, as it went about its business, discovering that the name-taker and ass-kicker carries a BMI of 27.51, which wound up in the range of 'Overweight'. "Just remember, muscle is heavier than fat!" said Fils-Aime.

Both Miyamoto and Fils-Aime went up against one another in a soccer-heading competition during the briefing. Other activities shown off in video form included push-ups, walking exercises, a ball-rolling mini-game, and hula hooping.

40 types of activities will be on offer, and they'll fall into four categories: Aerobic Exercise - 10-minute exercises that are designed to get the heart pumping; Muscle Conditioning - controlled motions using arms, legs and other body parts; Yoga Poses - classic poses that focus on balance and stretching; and Balance Games - fun activities, such as ski jumping and heading soccer balls, that challenge the player’s overall body balance.

A release date has yet to be announced.

My family will definatley be getting this product.

I think this is extremely clever. I don't think we will see any developers using it for 'gamers' games. But depending on the price, it may be worth it for Wii Fit alone. I could see the fitness world taking it seriously.

I wonder if you could snap a bunch of them together to create a big expensive DDR pad :)

Chris Kohler spoke to Reggie. he confirmed:

- Will be out in Japan this year, USA next year
- Game will cost more than the standard US$50 (which is the AUS standard $100).

I think it will be $110 or $120 (Similar to that of some PS3/360 games).

Dunno why the games don't use the Wii remote for added functionality/accuracy. I suppose it makes it more simple, but I dunno... seems kinda wasted.

Wanna bet the next Warioware game uses this, too?
