It appears this is old news but I only just found out about it on the weekend and I'm super excited to say the least. Not only is the first book in my favourite series being made into a tv show, but it's also in the very capable hands of Sam Raimi. Apparently it's already in pre-production and will air next year.

Sam Raimi gets Terry Goodkind’s bestselling Sword of Truth adventure series!

Sam Raimi, best known as the director of the hugely successful SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN II films, and his producing partner Joshua Donen, have optioned film rights for Terry Goodkind’s enormously popular bestselling SWORD OF TRUTH adventure series, published by Tor Books.

Having been approached by Hollywood a number of times over the past decade, Goodkind was never convinced that his 400,000 word bestselling novels could be successfully compressed into worthwhile feature films. In a meeting at the author’s home, the renowned director and producer instead conceived of a groundbreaking mini-series. Within two hours Goodkind was sold on the concept and negotiations commenced. Ten months later the deal was finally concluded. “It’s a dream come true to work with someone of such remarkable vision, talent, and ability,” Goodkind said. “Given Sam’s sincere love for these stories and his determination to only make great films, this mini-series will be a watershed event.”

All of Goodkind’s novels have been international bestsellers. Translated into 20 foreign languages, there are over 10 million copies in print. The SWORD OF TRUTH series began with WIZARD’S FIRST RULE in 1994. The 10th novel in the series, PHANTOM, is on sale now. The 11th and final volume is under contract and will be published in 2008.

Raimi and Donen hope to begin production of the opening mini-series, WIZARD’S FIRST RULE, within the next year, to be followed by ensuing volumes of the epic novels. The development process will begin while Raimi completes SPIDER-MAN III. Definitive word on the production will be available in early 2007.

WOOT!

WHY SO SERIOUS!
Sounds good. Though I've not read these books yet. But I'm sure lexie has them for me to steal one day :)

lol, I have at least the first one. It's not bad, but nothing I consider to be Earth-shattering. I got really turned off by the way this series seems to just continue on and on and on. Everything reaches a conclusion eventually, and 'exciting' events just can't keep on happening to the same characters over and over again. I'd like it better if the overall story seemed to go somewhere, giving me a purpose to keep on reading them. Of course, I probably only got about half way through the series, so things might have changed. To be honest, I'm somewhat surprised to hear that the series is ending.

I'm not so sure that Sam Raimi is the best of choices... Spiderman 3... His tv credits run to Xena and Hercules. I'm not sure if you'd consider that to be an advantage or not.

While I agree that some of the books in the middle didn't advance the overall story that much, they help develop the main characters more and explain their motivation. The storyline is really building up inthe last couple of books and I can't wait for the last book in the series which is due out in november.

Also I really like that the books can offer much more than just a typical fantasy read. If you see past the storyline there is an underlying philosophy there that I strongly agree with, which is maybe why I like the series so much. It's also proabably why a lot of people dislike it as they think it's a bit preachy.

That may have something to do with my feelings on the books, though I has been so long I really can't remember how "preachy" they were. Still, I don't like it when authors are too heavy-handed, even more so when I disagree with their philsophy. I read one series like that and hated the whole thing. Something along the lines of we can and must justify killing masses of people in the short term to prevent wholescale carnage in the long term. I would have bought it once or twice, but not in every single book. I have no idea why I was so persistant...

But it sounds like I'll have to give the Sword of Truth series another go if things pick up again in later books.

I found it was only really one book (Faith of the Fallen) that I thought could be accused of being preachy, the rest were pretty subtle and weren't really noticeable.

More good news.

You may have noticed in the press release that Sam Raimi said “produced with compelling, self-contained episodes.” The nature of TV syndication requires that each week’s episode be a story in itself, meaning that while the TV series will follow the background story of the book, it will not be able to follow the book exactly because there would be parts that would make an incomplete episode.

Therein lies the opportunity. The TV series, being visual, will actually require that we expand on the book in order to make each of these episodes work. Since each episode will have to be able to stand alone, some places will require additional material, so, as an example, we may incorporate some of the backstory into the show, showing, say, George Cypher going to get The Book of Counted Shadows. This means that the series will actually have more story content than the novel.

I'm so excited about this ;D

Oh wow, so they're going to spoil later stories to pad it out into separate episodes? I think season 2 of Dexter shows how awesome it is when original content by TV writers is combined with existing stories.

Looking a bit average, but there's still plenty of promise there.
