WHY SO SERIOUS!
Firstly...

[dohtml]<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7pfnqsEEEpo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7pfnqsEEEpo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>[/dohtml]

The animation is absolutely incredible. I cannot believe they're redoing this. I will be so glad to have HDDVD/BR versions of this stuff it will be amazing!

Now onto the juicy stuff!

Rebuild of Evangelion is an announced tetralogy of animated films in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

In September 2006, the October edition of the Japanese anime magazine Newtype first reported that the new cinema series "Rebuild of Evangelion" would be released in the summer of 2007. On September 9, 2006, GAINAX's official website confirmed that "Rebuild of Evangelion" will consist of four movies. The first three movies will be an alternate retelling of the TV series (including many new scenes, settings, backgrounds, characters), and the fourth movie will be a completely new conclusion to the story; the series is intended to be much more understandable and accessible to non-fans than the original TV series and movies.

Now I'm not too sure about there being a new conclusion to the series. I quite liked how open ended and left for interpretation EoE was and felt quite awed by the film in general.

On February 17, 2007 Anno released a statement [2] in a form of a movie poster that was shown in 50 cinemas in Japan, providing an explanation for his motivations in pursuing a new take on the franchise and stating a release date for the first film in Japanese theaters September 1, 2007.

Hideaki Anno will write the script for the first movie and will be the general director and manager for the entire project. Kazuya Tsurumaki and Masayuki will direct the movies while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will provide character designs and Ikuto Yamashita will provide mechanical designs. Shinji Higuchi and Tomoki Kyoda will provide storyboards for the first movie.

According to an article in the February 2007 issue of Newtype USA, the first movie will end with Operation Yashima, an incident that takes place during Episode 6 of the original Evangelion TV series. The article also states that a brand new character to the Evangelion universe will be introduced in the second installment and that some of the differences between the original series and the new movies will take advantage of 3D CG technology not available when the series was produced back in 1995.

Other known differences will include new NERV and SEELE emblems, which were later revealed on the official Rebuild website. Two versions of the new NERV logo have the word "NERV" extending out of the left-hand side of an upside-down apple, with the old motto "God's in his heaven, all's right with the world" either coming out of the right side of the apple or below the word NERV. The fig leaf from the old NERV logo is retained, now superimposed onto the apple. Another design has the original logo superimposed over the upside-down apple; the V in NERV is also slightly altered. The new SEELE logo incorporates the old logo (a triangle with seven eyes on it), with an apple inset inside of the triangle with a snake coiled around it. Written on the middle of the SEELE apple is the phrase "Überm Sternenzelt richtet Gott, wie wir gerichtet," which is taken from lines 71 and 72 of Friedrich Schiller's original poem Ode to Joy (with the word "Brueder" or "Brothers" being excluded), and translates as "Above the starry canopy, God judges as we judged"[3].

Another story change is that Kaworu will make a much earlier appearance; in the series, he was not introduced until episode 24.

First Trailer

The first trailer for Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone was recently screened in Japanese theaters and on July 13th it was uploaded on the official Evangelion website. The trailer includes:

  • A slightly altered design for Unit-01.
  • Several iconic scenes from the original series that have been recreated almost shot for shot, re-animated with modern digital animation techniques.
  • The production team has already stated that the film will end with the defeat of the 5th Angel, Ramiel. The trailer shows glimpses of Ramiel, Sachiel, and Shamshel, with updated designs for each.
  • Toji beating up Shinji as in Episode 3 of the series in retribution for his sister being injured in the battle against Sachiel.
  • Rei will be bandaged similar to how she was through the first three episodes as a result of her injuries when Eva-00 went berserk.
  • Several shots of Unit-01 being powered up inside of the Eva launch bay and Eva Unit-00 holding its shield just before the fight against Ramiel are included.
  • Some glimpses are seen of Tokyo-3's buildings emerging from the ground, utilizing the new computer generated imagery
  • The trailer ends with orbital shots of Japan completely turning going dark and then powering up again, as part of Operation Yashima in the fight with Ramiel (a similar orbital view appearing in the original series).

Utada Hikaru will be providing the theme song "Beautiful World" of her single Beautiful World / Kiss & Cry. "Fly Me To The Moon" also has a newly-created reprise remix from the original released in 2000. It serves as the theatrical trailer's song.

No official statements have been made as of yet regarding the licensing and international release of the films, leaving fans only to speculate as to which companies officially release them. Several of the English voice actors from the original series have expressed interest in reprising their roles for the upcoming project. These actors so far include the "trio" of lead roles, Spike Spencer, Amanda Winn Lee, and Tiffany Grant, who voice Shinji, Rei, and Asuka, respectively.

Awesome stuff. I hope it turns out well :)

If Tiffany Grant doesn't take German lessons I think someone should just shoot her. I cringed painfully through her mangling of the German language and I'm nowhere near being a native speaker. Such a poor job is insulting to the audience if not to the German language.

It never bothered me greatly. I know we had a massive debate about this so I won't relight that fire.

Personally I'm all for seeing the original VA's return for the English dubbing. But perhaps a little less over the top and more mature take this time?

God, they're just killing Eva, aren't they? They've had like 4 re-releases of the original series on DVD and now they're remaking it altogether? Jeez...

Anywho, I'd rather hear the original Japanese voice actors mangle foreign languages than the English ones. I've never seen Eva subbed, and the voice acting was always one of the big things that bothered me about the series...

Normally I don't either, but I watched it long ago before I discovered the joys of fansubbing on SBS.

Also, I'm probably going to be going against popular opinion, but despite enjoying it a fair bit, there's better anime/manga out there that deserve remakes. Then again, there have been a bunch of other shows being remade as well. Guess Japan's run out of originality
Will prolly check this out, anywho.

Nah, I don't think that you're going against popular opinion so much, just that eva fans can be particularly vocal.

To be honest though, this sounds like much more of a remake along the lines of George Lucas and Star Wars than a true remake. You'd hope that it won't be as souless as those were (okay so that's another debate), but sometimes it's good just to leave things as they are. Obviously this isn't something you can decide until it's been done though. But at the same time, fans will probably get pissed off if they dick around with the story too much.

I'm sure many would be pleased for an easier to understand finale than EoE was :P

I was under the impression that EoE was an alternate ending to the TV series, not the definitive ending? I haven't seen it, was just under that assumption. I was fine with the TV ending so I never found the need to bother with the movies...
