WHY SO SERIOUS!
|
Posted Image So I have a spare brand new copy of Gankutsuou Volume 1 to give away to a lucky poster. How To Win: Simply post in this thread what's your favourite anime series/movie and why. The winner will be selected depending on the quality of submitted entries. About The Show: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (巌窟王, Gankutsuō?, literally The Ruler of the Cave) is an anime series loosely based on Alexandre Dumas, père's classic French novel, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. Spanning 24 episodes, it was produced by GONZO, directed by Mahiro Maeda and broadcast by Animax across its respective networks in Japan, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, and other regions. Gankutsuou's unusual visual style layers Photoshop textures into digital animation, with backgrounds often rendered in 3D. The series features several famous pieces of classical music, including Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony, the Donizetti opera Lucia di Lammermoor, and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Read More... Good Luck! Great idea Acerlyte! Posting a small clip from youtube would be cool too :P Edited by Ingram, Friday May 30 2008, 11:38 PM.

Sometimes I think I was born backwards

Hmm, tough pick really. My two tied series for #1 are probably "Monster" and "Kaiji". I really enjoyed both reading Monster in manga form and then watching it as a series. It's about a Japanese brain surgeon that lives in Düsseldorf who saves the life of a boy who becomes involved in a series of murders, which eventually affects his career, marriage and everything. It gets to the point where he becomes obsessed with figuring out why the murders are happening, who is behind them and so on. It's really hard to say what makes the series so great without spoiling it immensely. Acerlyte's read it as well, so I'm sure he'll agree :D As for Kaiji, I've only watched the first season of it (since the second hasn't even started production yet), but it's essentially about a NEET (no education, employment, training) who gets stuck with the debt of a former workmate in excess of 10s of thousands of dollars... and the money is owed to Yakuza, to make matters worse. However, he's offered an opportunity to wipe the debt clear in a special kind of gambling cruise. On the cruise there's a series of gambling type games where everyone is essentially pitted against each other, only a limited number of people will have their debt cleared, the rest will be essentially sold off as slave labour. Even though Kaiji is insanely useless as far as job skills are concerned, he's not a moron, so the series focuses on the ways he tries to put things in his favour. It's pretty dialogue heavy, but it's entertaining the whole way through. Oh, the season doesn't end after the cruise, by the way, it's just the beginning. Again, without spoiling stuff, it definitely gets a lot better. So yer, that's me. I'm not really interested in winning Count of Monte Cristo off you though, already seen it etc, don't care to own the series... and I know if I started with one I'd have to buy the rest :P |

For Anime I have watched I would have to say without doubt, Trigun. It was the first anime I watched in the sense that it wasn't just some poorly dubbed, chopped up series for cartoon network. Not so strangely it was Demaar who introduced it to me and I thought, and still think, it rates as my most favourite anime. For those who don't know it is centred around a man known as Vash the Stampede who has allegedly caused ridiculous amounts of destruction and carnage including the entire destruction of a city. He has 60 billion double dollars bounty on his head which means various bounty hunters regularly confront him. Known to carry a rather large gun and an easy to spot bright red oufit he travels the planet followed by Milly and Meryl of the Bernadelli Insurance company whose aim is to minimise the damage caused by Vash. Having a bad reputation means most assume Vash to be a ruthless killing machine but it is found out fairly early on that while his skills with a gun are beyond belief he uses force only when absolutely necessary. This usually results in him taking extreme self-sacrificing measures to save others. He is also a complete tool wielding a goofy grin and often goes on and on about 'LOVE AND PEACE!' much to the bemusement of others. As the series progresses you get to find out more about Vash's past as well as the strange planet, Gunsmoke, the setting for the show. Instead of frustrating people further with my poor writing skillz I present thee with the IMDB entry and a youtube vid of ep 1. Click through to find links to the remainder of the ep. IMDB - Trigun This is the one that really got me interested actual anime and in the long run, manga as well (which I have often found to be much, much better than the anime versions). Definately a personal fave. LOVE AND PEACE!!! ^_^ |

Fine, don't back me up on Monster :P I will back you up on Trigun. If it weren't for the fact that it was a very early series and thus had horrible subtitles, I'd probably buy the boxset. It's absolutely hilarious that the insurance agencies have Vash the Stampede insurance and have two agents following him. I gotta read the manga sometime too, apparently it diverges a lot from the animu... |

I've never watched Monster. I have read the manga and if this comp said which was your favourite manga, then Monster would certainly be it. ^_^ I should add though that while I have watched a number of different shows, I most certainly have missed many popular ones. My Anime library is very small... maybe it's time I did something about that  Edited by Acerlyte, Saturday May 31 2008, 12:13 PM.

Well, Monster is a rare case where the transition to anime from manga is almost exact. In fact I'm pretty sure the whole way through it's a 1:1 conversion, so if you've read/watched one you can pretty easily judge the other :) As for building a library of animu, I can hook you up with some stuff... I just need to get a better idea of what you like. I'm still not entirely sure, since you surprise me sometimes :P |

I got an underwood, high-5 if you know what I mean
|
Ninja Scroll was the very first anime movie that I ever saw, I didn't even know people were allowed to make something that awesome, after that I went out of my way to get my hands on anything anime, and that's how I got into other anime movies/series. My favourite series would have to be Cowboy Bebop, it is so much fun to watch the soundtrack kicks ass. |

Let me guess you saw it on SBS? Same here, was the first anime I ever watched. I had to do it with my Grandmother. We were in bed watching the TV from 2 different rooms and every time a naughty scene was on she told me to close my eyes. Of course I didn't :P I was pretty young :D |

First anime I can recall watching is either Mazinger Z (as Tranzor Z) or Voltes 5. Oh, Astro Boy too. One of those three was my first. Saw Astro Boy on ABC, but my mum or dad rented the other two for me. I can't remember if I picked them or not since I was like 3 at the time. But yeah, I was a giant robot whore as a kid, couldn't get enough, which obviously lead to liking Voltron and Macross (as Robotech) later on. For stuff I actually recognised as anime though, probably Samurai Pizza Cats or Tekkaman Blade (as Teknoman). Tekkaman was surprisingly mature for a morning cartoon block, so it was pretty obvious that it wasn't a typical cartoon. The first really mature animu I saw though was Akira, like almost everyone else :P I've been a little weeaboo for decades lol |
