 All I'm saying is that this Toshiba thing isn't going to surpass what we can already do with HTPC's so it isn't going to be some incredible thing that will kill BR totally.

As people say, you can't turn shit into gold. Or even bronze in this case.

 Yeah, but my point is that when you say "we", you're not talking about the mass consumer. Perhaps that's not who Toshiba will be marketing their player towards, but it's who they should be ;)

 Fair enough. You're probally right in saying that. I don't think you can get a standalone DVD player that upscales and does nothing else. Maybe we should get one for your parents so that we can take a hammer to that shitty Teac one they have :P

 You don't know for sure that Toshiba's player can't do something your HTPC can't already. Companies don't spend millions on R&D and marketing for nothing...

 People have wrote AVISynth scripts for FFDshow for years to upscale, deblock and sharpen DVD images. Seriously what else can you do? There is only so much detail you can get out of a 720x576 image with a bitrate of 5-7Mbit!

 Try explaining that to noobs. Buying a player in this case would be the path of least resistance so that would be what people would take regardless.

HTPC? What's that? Oh, a PC kinda like the one I use to check Facebook and my emails. You can connect it to your tv? Really?

 MS has kept on denying rumours for a while now, which isn't so odd. Nintendo denied the existence of the Nintendo DS right up until the day before it was released.

A news article about a manufacturer claiming they won a contract bid for the model is far from official, but it's pretty damn close if the report is accurate.
