WHY SO SERIOUS!
Most definitely not some kind of advertising deal with James Cameron...

Leak Seems to Confirm Xbox Live Avatars On the Way

A yet-to-be-plugged leak has spilled rumors and secrets on Call of Duty, Forza Motorsport 3, and plans for Xbox Live. Xbox 360 Fanboy is rooting through the plumbing, here's what has broken so far on that site.

• Microsoft seems to be developing a response to the Mii, confirming a long running-rumor. From the docs obtained, it seems avatars will replace the gamer picture and "provide a more lifelike, animated, and fully customizable persona."

More on these leaks as they develop.

Courtesy of the same leak that's spilled everything else today, there's a little more information to be had on the rumoured introduction of Microsoft's Avatar system. Some of the marketing material mentions that, like Miis are in stuff like Wii Sports, the Avatars will be implemented into "various arcade and retail games" as playable characters. Also mentioned are "hundreds of clothing options", a feature which is interesting when you look at the sample pic attached to the leak (above) and - provided it's real - see one of the characters is wearing an Incredibles shirt, suggesting that unlike Nintendo's offering, there'll be the option of clothing your Avatar in various licensed outfits. Maybe, and this is total conjecture, even a little Master Chief costume?

I guess this is kind of cool. But still obviously inspired by Mii's. Hopefully you can opt not to have one and stick with gamer pics. Though I doubt they'll remove the option for it since they must surely make some money out of silly people paying for little icons...

Looks fugly. Too detailed but not realistically proportioned enough and absolutely no charm. Looks as generic as the crappy things you see on the net.

I'm thinking that (if this rumour is 100%) Microsoft will introduce a scaled user-pays system. There'll be the basic package similar to Miis which will be available free of charge. But to get really funky, you'll have to buy clothing, accessory and maybe even hairdo packages. Special costumes will be released to promote games on a regular basis.

Microsoft never miss a money making exercise. They won't get rid of gamer pics while these can also be sold to make money too.

So basically they're doing the same thing for the xbox that they did with MSN - introducing "advanced" display images at the cost of $$$.

Well, these will work much the same as Miis as well, stylised and playable in game avatars. They haven't announced a business model.. but I'm sure they're going to.
