Sony's heard the call and apparently firmware 2.40 is the answer.

A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements.
For anyone unaware, the XMB is the main method of controlling everything in your PS3 (same goes for the PSP), so having access to it in game would allow you to potentially play any music you want while in game, send/receive messages with friends and so on; functions that were previously not possible.

SO in-game XMB will work like the 360's in-game menu?

About time eh? Can't imagine having a 360 w/o the in-game menu... How else would I be able to stand Assassin's Creed repetitive nature w/o music?

The Playstation blog has post on in game XMB and some other related stuff. They have a video in fact...

I reckon they've finally met the 360 in game guide and then some. Some stuff kinda bothers me, but then the 360 doesn't do that stuff any better so it's just a problem I have with the current consoles in general :P
Nintendo's been left in the dust, anyway.

Keep in mind all you PS3ists that you will need to replay all your previous games to get their trophies!

That'd be kinda bone headed of Sony to make it that way. They should do the same thing as Valve with the Medic achievements and give people rewards retroactively...

Anyways, here's another video showing off how trophies work. I haven't watched this one yet so it may have some startling revelations... or not.

Bad news everyone!

The PS3 2.40 update has been bricking some consoles in it's wake. Rather than suffer the repercussions of a 1000+ fanboys storming Sony with torches and pitchforks, the 2.40 update has been REMOVED from it's update servers and Sony websites.

Sony is currently investigating this PS3 bricking phenomenom.

Oh wow... that's fricken horrible. Any particular versions it's bricking? Like the 60/20GB full hardware BC models? The 80GB software BC models? Or the new 40GB no BC models?

It's a very contained outbreak.
Only a few consoles have been bricked because of this update.

Anyways, some genius has said that if you take out the PS3 HDD and format it on your PC, then your PS3 will unbrick itself - of course you will lose everything on the system - This means that the update is purely a software screw up.
