If Alien Hominid is a comedic take on Metal Slug, then The Behemoth's Next Game is a take on Double Dragon. Or perhaps Treasure's Guardian Heroes, what with all the stylized medieval art, four-player simultaneous gameplay, and RPG-lite leveling-up. But we'll stick with Double Dragon for now, seeing as how the designers threw in a special parody of that game's introduction at the beginning of the Comic-con demo.

Each of the four characters in the game has a different background -- from fire and ice to poison and lightning -- that allows them a different magic ability to mix up the combat. While the central gameplay revolves around two action buttons and lots of crazy juggle combos, the magic serves as a way to differentiate the characters.

First up in our hands-on time, we fought through what seemed to be a traditional level, chopping bad guys and practicing air combos. Then came the boss, a giant and stylish barbarian that filled probably a third of the screen at certain moments.

But it was after we defeated this monstrosity that the game took a surprising turn. The four of us had saved the day, and then we instantly shifted from partners to competitors -- trying to kill each other to see who got to kiss the princess. Apparently this happens every time you save a princess in the game.

This game is gonna be mad. Makes me wanna find a copy of Alien Hominid.

you meant mad right? and yes, i agree, mad indeed. man my hype for the Wii kinda died a little after seeing stuff like this and LittleBigPlanet, and Nintendo's continued stupidity and idiocy with their online system :(

 Yeah, I meant mad. But yes, XBLA craps all over Virtual Console. Absolutely no doubt about it. Nintendo are shafting end users by shafting indie developers.
Srsly, do those arseholes shovelling crap onto Wii deserve dev kits more than people like the guys making this game?

Edit: Have another clip!

its bullshit really. nintendo has hand PLENTY of time to get the VC right. they would have been observing, although maybe non-directly, the success of the XBLA within the span of developing the VC for Wii. what was the end product? nothing but a library of games we played a decade ago, literally. no visual improvements, no added features. we're all holding out for future improvements, but so far have seen jack shit, not to mention no other plans of other downloadable features that rival the XBLA

Ah hah, Golden Axe was an obvious one, but I didn't think of Knights of the Round. I remeber Acerlyte showing me that game ages ago, it was awesome. I wonder if Behemoth did take inspiration from that...

Finally something solid. Kotaku reports that the game will be hitting "this summer".
Press release

“Castle Crashers” (The Behemoth). “Castle Crashers” is the second title currently in development by award-winning independent developer The Behemoth, creator of “Alien Hominid HD.” The role-playing game (RPG) adventure will let up to four players hack, slash and smash their way together through a visually stunning hand-drawn landscape. “Castle Crashes” launches this summer.

Also some new screenshots...

Castle Crashers has finally been rated by the ESRB (Teen), which means it shouldn't be too far from release, assuming other rating organisations don't drag their arses.

MS denied it, but Braid's pricing (this week's XBLA game, 1200 ms points) revealed this week matches what was on the list along with Castle Crashers. Looks like this one will cost 1800 MS points, which is more than double the standard XBLA title. I no longer think the game is worth buying. I could get *counts* 11 songs and a bit of change in Rock Band for that. Or, you know, two other XBLA games I don't own yet like Bionic Commando Rearmed (which comes out next week and actually ran a poll for how much it would cost, then followed the results) which reportedly have far more content. Here's the listing that MS was denying as a mistake...
Quote:

# July 30: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (800 MS points / $10)
# August 6: Braid (1200 MS points / $15)
# August 13: Bionic Commando Rearmed (800 MS points / $10)
# August 20: Galaga Legions (800 MS points / $10)
# August 27: Castle Crashers (1800 MS points / $22.50)

What a rip. I'm so sick of these companies trying to gouge consumers like this.
