According to Nikkei (a major Japanese speciality newspaper) Nintendo will be releasing a new DS in Japan later this year. Included is a camera, SD card slot, and music playback functionality and bigger screens. An unclear point is whether both screens with be touch screens.

I'm currently extremely sceptical at this news. You'd think something this big would have been announced at E3? Also, as many people say, the DS still has a lot of running power (possibly the longevity of the PS2 imo), and it'd be kind of foolish for them to just release an entirely new model. Seriously, sales sky rocket in Japan just by releasing a new colour, not even mentioning when big games get released. So yeah, not exactly sure what to think about this news.

I'd say that even with all this momentum though it just seems like the ideas are running out for new games for the DS.

I'm trying to think of a game that has been announced this month and last month for the DS so even though it may have skyrocketing sales in Japan the developers may be longing for a bit more power in their console like possibly a bit more ram for things like a browser and a permanent storage solution that could mean the introduction of some serious DLC for games like GH: On Tour. That would be the first thing for developers I'd think then they'd implement the other features a bit later like after the transition faze is in full swing.

If this is what it sounds like it could be it can seriously kill off the PSP's competition as well and become *the* handheld console

Sd slot?

Maybe they're going to create a virtual console for gameboy games so we can play it on the DS? Now wouldn't that be something...

It's possible that it's a refresh of the hardware, like the DS lite. SD card slot could be for downloaded games and content like mattman and nspa suggests. Wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo held the announcement for TGS, since the DS is arguably doing best in Japan.

Sense is not common.
Since when did Ninty need a reason to tweak hand-held hardware? I think it'd be a cool thing if the rumour was true. Then again, I still own my Phat, so I guess deep down I really don't care.

A TGS announcement would lead nicely to a pre-Xmas release though, so the timing's good.

I think there definitely is a new DS in the works...the GBA was doing well when the DS was launched....and it is getting due. Technology is a whole lot cheaper again......also Apples iphone/itouch is getting dangerously popular.........there is a stealth entry into the gaming market if I ever saw one.

On top of that, ninty hasn't announced any 1st party titles for the DS.... so maybe they're saving their pennies to create a redesigned DS (which is good timing since my touch-screen can't calibrate itself anymore).

The most useless feature for the new DS would be music playback (movie playback might've been a better idea, only if we don't have to convert xvid/divx files). The PSP has music playback and I haven't ran into anyone who thinks this was the best idea in the world - who wants to carry a clunky PSP or DS around for music playback?

I use my PSP for music playback, but only because I'm carrying it around to use as an ebook reader too.

Some people have used their current DS as music players using homebrew to run it anyway...
